If you're wondering why the title 'Zola' sounds familiar, chances are that you have heard of it before. In 2015, a woman by the name of Aziah Wells (aka Zola) started a thread on Twitter in one of the most surprising conversations on social media. Zola told a story about a terrible trip to Florida with an exotic dancer and the happenings that followed went viral for the surprising essence of her experience that felt as if was a true scripted narrative due to the eccentric nature.
Soon after, Zola was approached to sell her story with many companies showing interest, and now it is confirmed that her story will be shared soon with a premiere at Sundance Film Festival. Sundance released their feature film lineup with the first official snippet of Zola along with the cast and crew behind the project. On the Sundance website we learned:
The movie originally had a couple of delays as the creative team were dropped early, but the upcoming Zola film is complete and ready to go for consumption as one of A24's newest additions. A24 has brought widely praised movies such as Lady Bird, Hereditary, and Midsommar, so the company has entrenched themselves for backing niche movies with cult followings. Because of the extreme attention that the Zola tale recieved, we can only think this movie will be something that audiences will be talking about after it's upcoming Sundance premiere.
